BUT HOW DID YOU FIND IT?

A short blog on how I found my breast cancer lump before I knew it was cancer.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been asked this over the past two weeks. I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 4.11.19 – I’ll get to what that earth shattering phone call is like in the future. For now, I’m going to go back to the end of February.

Anyone that knows me knows I work out basically everyday – and I absolutely love it. Well in February after coming off a foot injury and stopping my half marathon training I was so excited to get back into lifting. So I started training bench press and push ups A LOT (both of these things make me feel badass.)

Long story short my pec muscles were super sore so I was pressing on them to try to massage them out and I felt a marble sized HARD lump on my left breast. I felt my stomach flip flop. I reached out to my mom and some close friends, they all assured me it was most likely some type of cyst or fibroadenoma but they agreed I should have someone look at it.

I went to my OBGYN, then got ultrasound and mammogram which lead to a surgery consult and a stereostatic mammogram where they took 14 biopsies of both the calcified and uncalcified sections of the mass.

Go to the doctor. These last two weeks have been chaos, a roller coaster, and terrifying. But, I caught this early. I was so aware of my body and something not being right. Listen to your body. Go to your appointments, workout regularly and know what normal feels like.

I’m going to be walking the Gainesville breast cancer walk on 10/26 if you would like to donate to American Cancer Society or sign up to be on my team click the link below!

I’ll be writing regularly step by step of what this was all like and what to expect if you or a loved one goes through this. Knowledge is power. Writing is therapeutic for me – I may be a clinical pharmacist but I originally went to college for journalism. Go Gators!

Until next time,

Sami
